History

The history of AB "Švenčionėlių grūdai" ("Švenčionėliai Grain") began in 1954 when the grain buying centre was established in Švenčionėliai. After the manufactory of composite forage production was built in 1964, the production of composite forage had been the key policy of the enterprise since 1965.

Old factory

Convenient geographical position (the enterprise is located by the gross main line Vilnius-Daugpilis and Utena-Švenčionys highway) influenced the further development of the enterprise. In the years of 1966, 1970 and 1971 three elevator burtons with the total capacity of 30 thousand tons were constructed. Since then, the enterprise had been storing raw materials indispensable for the forage production and, in addition, had been buying up rye and malt barley and stockpiling part of the state's alimentary grain. The grain admission branches of the company in Švenčionėliai, Utena and Dūkštas used to buy up, prepare and earmark for flourmills about 14 thousand tons of rye and 2 thousand tons of malt barley.

The enterprise bought up and marketed its production in Švenčionys, Ignalina, Utena, Molėtai, Zarasai, Rokiškis, Vilnius and Širvintos districts where the enterprise had established steady and durable links both, with grain cultivators and the users of the ready production.

During the soviet period, the enterprise did not meet with realization problems, its' ready production being willingly bought by poultry-, fishery- and collective- farms. However, after reconstituting the independence, it started getting more and more difficult to sell composite forage, the basic production of the enterprise, and the total revenue was dipping apace. Despite the fact that the enterprise was making efforts to search for resorts: introduced the line of prepacking composite forage into sacks, built a mill, a bakery and a store, it was closed in 1999 and about 150 workers got unemployed.

The picture of the enterprise before reconstruction

In June, 2001 AB "Švenčionėlių grūdai" came into possession of a new holder, UAB "Šiaurės vilkas" (‘Northern Wolf'). The new possessor acquired the residuary property of the enterprise via the fund of state property and attempted to reactivate the company. UAB ‘Maltosa' was established in December, 2001. In the year of 2002, the business plan ‘Re-orientation of the grain-processing enterprise towards malt production' was prepared and the streamlining of production processes was initiated. The competition of project preparation was held. The winner of the competition, the Czech company "Euromopos" prepared the technological project of malt production, whereas the Construction Planning Institute of Lithuania worked out the project of constructions. The general contractor of the construction UAB "Ortitas" launched the works in March, 2003 and completed the construction in March, 2005. The construction works of the project were also administered by UAB "Visagino statybos konsorciumas" ("Visaginas Building Consortium"), UAB "Eldermonta", UAB "Vilmeta", UAB "Gerbūsta" and a range of other subcontractors.

During the reconstruction time, the block of composite forage production with the main control desk of the enterprise, operating the technological process of grain soak and seedling separation was restored. A couple of new production blocks - a malt couch-house and a hothouse were erected, storage of liquid gas and a drainage reservoir were built and the engineering network was streamlined or installed afresh.

UAB ‘Maltosa' after reconstruction

The whole enterprise is completely automated and controlled by three operators at the central desk. The work of all technological lines is under control of the programme installed which secures high quality production. In order to guarantee the production quality control, the enterprise laboratory was reconstructed and completed. Apart from modern quality analysis instruments, the laboratory has a micro-maltkiln providing the analysis and programming of the forthcoming technological process and the possibility of manufacturing high quality production from different kinds of malt barley.

Kilning

The selection of the appropriate quality malt barley underlies the high quality malt production. The major suppliers of this kind of barley are UAB "Šiaurės vilkas" and UAB "Joniškio agrochemija" ("Joniškis Agrochemicals").

UAB ‘Maltosa' transport

The production marketing is highly influenced by water. The water quality in Švenčionėliai did not answer our or the townspeople's demands a year ago. Thanks to the efforts of Švenčionys district mayor and UAB "Vilniaus vandenys" ("Vilnius Waters"), the water purification station was built. Today the water quality does not elicit any problems.

Currently, the enterprise is producing high quality light malt which is purchased by the brewers and kvass-makers of Lithuania and Latvia. Prospectively, this year about 22 thousand tons of malt are going to be produced and the available productional capacity shall be exploited in full.
